Known as the place where "rail and water meet", Welland has a long history as a railroad crossroads. It also is home to the famous Welland Canal, which runs from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie and allows shipping to bypass Niagara Falls. The canal once ran right through the center of the city dividing it into the East and West sides. The Welland bypass project moved the main canal to the outskirts of the city in 1967. The old alignment of the canal is now known as the Welland Recreational Waterway and has several recreational facilities and tourist attractions along its shores. With its picturesque river setting, Welland is a great destination for tourism and day trips for Canadians and Western New Yorkers alike.
